The Literacy Council of Highlands was founded in 1991 after surveys and statistics showed one
third of the adult population in Macon County does not have a high school diploma and almost 15%
of those adults have less than a ninth grade education.  More recent data shows that fifty-one
percent of the adult population here in Macon County struggle with illiteracy.  This means a
significant number of our fellow community members cannot even complete a job application, not to
mention enjoy the experiences of reading that we all take for granted.

Adults who cannot read have trouble with the basics of everyday life, from reading street signs to
filling our insurance forms, to helping their children with school work.  Children whose parents
cannot read are twice as likely to become adults who cannot read and these same children are five
times more susceptible to dropping out of high school, continuing the cycle of illiteracy.

The educational programs at the Literacy Council of Highlands are designed to help break this
cycle of illiteracy!

Our
After School Tutoring Program provides individualized, one-on-one tutoring to students of
all ages at Highlands School.  We provide this instruction in all school subjects including reading,
elementary math, advanced math such as Algebra II and Geometry, as well as Chemistry and
Social Studies.  Currently, we have 65 students enrolled in this program and have up to 25
volunteers each year.  This program provides the extra help students need that is not available to
them otherwise.

Our
Adult Literacy Program also provides one-on-one tutoring for adult students of all ages who
struggle with reading and writing.  An astonishing 51% of the adult population here in Macon
County cannot read a newspaper or fill out a job application and we work hard to outreach our
fellow community residents who could benefit from these services.

Our
GED Program is offered to students who wish to finish their high school education, assisting
them in obtaining their General Equivalency Diploma.  Through the GED classes that we offer,
students are prepared for the five components of the GED test through individual tutoring, small
group classes and practice tests.

Our
English as a Second Language (ESL) Program provides instruction in English language
skills to the non-English speakers of our community.   Small group classes are offered in three
levels:  Beginning, Intermediate and Advanced and provide the opportunity to practice
conversational topics that are essential to everyday life.

Our
Computer Lab Program provides 10 computers for student usage of all types.  Each
computer is equipped with state of the art Rosetta Stone language learning software in both
English and Spanish.  We have also recently added reading tutorial software for students of all
ages, from Kindergarten to adult.  This lab is an invaluable tool in helping the Literacy Council to
better provide our services to the community members of Highlands and Macon County.

All of our
tutors serve on a volunteer basis which enables us to offer our programs free of charge.
This dedicated group of volunteers keeps our programs strong, effective and available to all
members of our wonderful, unique community!
